Art in the Outback
Art in the Outback is based at the University of New South Wales College of
Fine Arts (COFA) in the art area of Sydney. This program, intended for practitioners,
is designed to introduce art students to the unique visual, historical and environmental
aspects of the Australian landscape. Through field work, formal lectures, studio
work and museum visits students students will receive an overview of Australian
and Aboriginal art. The program visits Darwin, Sydney, western New South Wales

Australian History and Aboriginal Culture

Dreaming Tracks to Super Highways: A Cross-Cultural Journey
with Indigenous Australians
This field-study excursion will last for 18 days and take students to a series
of site that are historically and spiritually significant to indigenous Australians
including Yuendumu, Uluru (Ayer's Rock), Glen Helen, Goose Bluff, Kings Canyon,
Devils Marbles and Alice Springs.One week prior to the excursion on campus at
James Cook University will be spent being introduced to the works of indigenous

Australian Adventure
Through a series of interactive lectures, field trips and visits, participants
are able to gain first-hand knowledge of life "down under". The topics
to be covered in the lecutre include Australian Music, Society, Art, Literature,
Economy, Education, Indigenous Studies, Sports, Politics and Social Welfare.
The course will be hosted in conjunction with the University of Queensland,

This course is aimed at media/communication, environmental and liberal arts
students. It will provide an overview of the Australian media and examine its
role in reporting about and shaping the public's view about the unique natural
resources and enviroment of Australia, by asking questions such as "What
environmental issues have shaped Australian culture and identity"? Development
issues surrounding the 2000 Olymic games in Sydney and threats to wildlife and

Beyond Fatal Shores: Australian History
This program, run in conjunction with the University of New South Wales, allows

Crime and the Media in Australia
This intensive four week course examines the way hournalists and media organizations
report and construct news about crime and criminal justice matters. Students
can expect to gain 6 US course credits. Topics include media forms and processes,
coverage of bizarre or high profile crimes, media law, ethical issues, investigative
reporting, Aboriginal justice issues and crime facts and fiction. There is a
research component and field work.

Contemporary Issues in Math Education
This course, offered at the Masters level, will be led by faculty of the Australian
Catholic University and will consist of a mixture of seminar-style classes,
school visits and school related assessment takes. Topics to be addressed are:

building relevance into mathematics, the impact of technology on math curricula

Exploring Australian Education

Summer Courses in Environmental Studies
Australian Eco Tour
This program gives you the unique opportunity to travel from Sydney to the most
remote roadhouses in the Outback while studying the plants, animals and geological
features of Australia. It will emphasize the basic concepts in environmental
education for primary and secondary schools, studying the national parks of
Australia and also paying special attention to the cultural relationships between
people and environment, especially through artwork. This five week program will
allow students to travel by an air-conditioned, toilet and video equipped coach,
and camp out at night in recognized campgrounds in tents or in bunkhouse accommodations.
This six credit program is open to all students with good academic standing.

Australian Environment
An unparalled opportunity to experience and to understand a variety of Australia's
ecosystems. The course will emphasise the ways in which native plants and vertebrate
animals have adapted to these diverse habitats. Extensive fieldwork and travel

Australian Wildlife and Conservation
A six week course that explored the physical and biological nature of selected
Australian landscapes. The course, which is equivalent to an introductory-level
science course, includes extensive field-study excursions - from Kakadu National
Park to Cairns, on the Great Barrier Reef. From rain forests and rock caostlines,
to coral reefs and arid interior landscapes, study Australian conservation strategies

Duke in Australia: Biogeography
The program focuses on the distribution of plants and animals in space and time
as determined by the interaction of geophysics, geology, climate and evolutionary

Environmental Management of Tropical Reef and Island Ecosystems
Through a combinaion of lectures and field-based expeditions, students will
gain a first-hand understanding of the ecology of coral reefs, and major management
strategies. Field study is also involved. During these expeditions students
will gain practical experience in coral reef monitoring techniques. Expeditions
are ar Oprheus Island, Pelorus Island and the Kelso Reef on the Outer Barrier
Reef.

Ocean and Reef Ecology
This is a program conducted in conjunction with the of New South Wales. It examines
the biodiversity and ecology of temperate and tropical marine habitats of Australia.
Studies will include a comparative analysis of the phycological, invertebrate,
vertebrate and physical components of the ecosystems of south-east Australia

Maritime and Environmental History of the South Coast -
A Sailing Adventure
This course traces the history and influence of Eurpoean interaction with the
marine and coastal environment of the south coast of Western Australia. The
physical and biological characteristics of the south coast are explored in detail.
The course will also examine the historical and contemporary scientific reports.
The course will be split between class time for the first two weeks, with the

University of Sydney Summer School |
Winter Down Under
Winter Down Under is a special program designed for students who wish to become
acquainted with Australian life and can take advantage of Intersession to earn
three credits. Students will be hosted by the University of Queensland, located
in Brisbane. Site visits will be made to various Australian business organizations
to enhance the students learning experience and gain knowledge about doing business
in the Pacific Rim. Participants earn a total of 3 undergraduate credits. Students
will be housed with families that are associated with the University of Queensland.
Participants have found that living with a family, particularly over the New
Year, gives a wonderful insight into the Australian culture. Applicants must
have a GPA of 2.5 or higher. Acceptance into the program is based on academic
standing, recommendations, and a personal study statement. The 1999/ 2000 program
will begin December 27, arriving in Australia on December 29, and finish January
20, arriving in the US on January 21. Entire costs for the program, including
tuition, housing and airfare are estimated to be around $3800.

Marine Ecology of Temperate Australia
This course provides a general grounding in the major concepts of contemporary
marine ecology, and detailed study and analysis of temperate Australian marine
systems. The course includes field work, laboratory practicals, lectures, tutorials,

scientists. The majority of the course will be delivered at Flinders University's

Winter Courses in the Performing Arts
From Script to Screen
Now in its seventh year, the Summer School in Filmmaking: From Script to Screen
held on campus at the University of Melbourne, offers intensive teaching
in all aspects of film production. Each day or session is taught by leading
Australian film industry practitioners in the their area of expertise. The course
is designed to cover the essential skills, basic knowledge and industry insight
needed to make films, knowledge that would normally require years of experience
to acquire, and will equip participants with the confidence, knowledge and skills
to start a career in film or television and translate their own ideas and visions
to the screen. More exciting than a film festival. More real than film itself.
You can begin to understand the enormous skill and energy that goes into that
smoothly finished product on the screen and find your own part in it. Dates:

Australian National Internship Program
The program provides access to internship placements for Australian and overseas
university students. These placements can be with the Federal parliament, the
Australian Public Service, the Australian Capital Territory Assembly or Service,
The Australian Council for Overseas Aid, Greening Australia, Keep Australia
Beautiful National Association, social policy or non-government peak and community
organizations. Students complete a research project under the supervision of
academic staff for which they receive an academic grade. Dates: February, mid-May

This program offers qualified students the opportunity to blend work experience
with specific learning objectives and structured reflection. Most placement
options are in Australian national and state parliaments, goverment agencies;

Internships International
These internships, covering ALL, discliplines and fields, provide valuable exposure
to foreign markets. Internships International provide the following services:
placement in the internship, counselling and assessment in the early stages,
a "survival kit" including a list of possible housing sources, assistance
in addressing administrative procedures and sample publications. Internships
International offers the opportunity to add a foreign dimention to a college
or graduate degree. Dates: Year round

Social Work Placement
The School of Social Administration and Social Work offers overseas social work
students the opportunity to take their field placements in Adelaide. Students
are provided with social work practice experiences in one of Adelaide's human
service agencies under the supervision of a qualified social worker from that
agency and an academic staff member from Flinders. The length of the program
is dependant on the student's professional requirements. Dates: Year round

South Australian Internship
The program offers placement in a wide and diverse range of public sector sites,
with links to 50 South Australian organizations. Students may undertake research
and gain experience in areas such as theatre and television, environmental agencies,
Aboriginal services, women's services and disability services. Dates: July to
November

Sydney Internship
The program is divided into parts. The first seven weeks help students become
familiar with Sydney and prepare them for their internship. They enroll in a
mandatory "Introduction to Australia" course and chose an additional.
The final seven weeks are assigned internships geared towards their individual
interests in the following areas: advertising & public relations, arts,
business and economics, hospitality administration, media (journalism, broadcasting,
film) politics, and social sciences. Dates: 13 weeks (May - August)

Sydney Summer Internship
Earn academic credit, enhance professional knowledge and improve parctical skills
through a quality six-week placement in one of Sydney's leading public institutions
or commercial interprises. Placements are available in a broad range of areas
including business; social sciences; humanities; and the visual, fine and graphic
