Description:
This program will present an overview of key themes in Australian history and society. Using a variety of teaching mediums (lectures, seminars, films and excursions) and an interdiscliplinary approach, the program will introduce students to major aspects of the Australian experience. What are the historical origins of stereotypes? What role has racial/ethnic conflict played in the shaping of contemporary society and politics? To what extent is there a disctinctive Australian literary and visual culture? How have the Australians negotiated the complex series of relationships with its powerful allies (including the US) and near neighbors? Students will have the option of exploring these themes through either a history or a literature focus.
