Description:
The course will seek to 1) determine what forest birds, mammals and reptiles use replanted areas, and how they affect planted rainforest succession; 2) investigate the potential for creating wildlife corridors between fragmented rainforest parks; 3) investigate the success of different tree species and planting patterns in restored areas; and 4) assess interest of local land owners in developing timber and wildlife values on their own lands. Participants will design and assess specific reforesting and management strategies and physically plant seedlings, some of which have been grown in the Center's shade house, then implement knowledge to convert a stretch of farm land between two protected rainforest areas into a reforested habitat corridor. Lectures addressing relevant topics and guest lecturers will provide a base for fieldwork.
