The latest, and possibly the most impressive, resource online is Picture Australia from the Australian National Library. This is a massive collection of photos covering every possible subject. Well worth a visit!
For almost anything about Australia, see Australia in Brief a series of short essays with "facts and figures" on many subjects from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. Also check out their Fact Sheet Library. The DFAT directory provides leads to many useful government sites.
